The Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona on 11 – 13 May 2012 will begin Formula 1 summer tour around Europe. Who is going to win? – watch the trailer
The key to success in Barcelona is a well-balanced car, which can cope with the various medium-speed corners. It is not a great place for overtaking and a good qualifying result has been considered essential to win the race. In the past, the driver on pole position has won this race for nine of the last ten seasons.
Michael Schumacher has been the most successful driver at Barcelona circuit wining this race six times. This year he is not confident that Mercedes will achieve the victory on Sunday, claiming that the characteristics of the Circuit de Catalunya did not appear to suit the MGP W03 in pre-season testing.
Kimi Raikkonen is the only other current driver to have won this event more than once, in 2005 for McLaren and in 2008 for Ferrari. He can do it again on Sunday, especially that he came close to taking victory at the last race in Bahrain.
Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button have all won the Spanish Grand Prix once. Certainly Vettel and Button could take the win unless Ferrari makes a surplice, although it looks that a wet race is necessary for Alonso to win in front of his Spanish fans. Alonso’s only victory in Barcelona came in 2006 for Renault.
Alonso expects the Catalan track will serve “to change this trend in 2012 … in terms of points we are pretty good, but in Barcelona we have to take a step forward and look forward to win” said Alonso was to the Spanish press
