ONE & OTHER - Britain’s got no talent

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

“Every hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days without a break”, “A portrait of UK”, “A living monument and a representation of the whole of humanity“, “A freak Show”, “Another Big Brother “, “Britain’s got no talent “. There must be many creative people within the army of 2400 plinthers, unfortunately you have to sacrifice a lot of your time to spot them. We took an endurance test and watched the event for 10 hours in one day and night in July. Than we watched many plinthers via live video streaming on internet during a few days (see www.oneandother.co.uk ).

Most of the people have used the project as the free advertising opportunity for their businesses, clubs, enterprises, charities, associations and most often just advertising themselves.

Others are the hopeful entertainers coming on the plinth to sing, dance and provide various form of amusement for the global audience and the public. The people who failed or feel less talented seek an approval of the crowd by giving away small gifts:  sweets, balls, lighting steaks, toys, etc..

There is a very substantial group of plinthers doing simply nothing or almost nothing (seating, standing, reading books, making drawings, taking photographs just for themselves and not willing to share anything with the audience.  A few even covered themselves avoiding revealing their identities.

And finally the artist, one of the best sculptor who entered the show business of the commercial television competing directly with Simon Cowell and his ” Britain’s Got Talent “.  In fact they have the same idea - a portrait of the nation, a celebration of creativity and a mass event of the popular culture. The difference is that Cowell’s show is purely commercial and has no ambition to be called art. Maybe Antony Gormley is going to catch up by installing telephone lines for viewers to vote?
