Once again, Chick Corea and John McLaughlin get together along with some of the best musicians in modern jazz in their new musical project, the Five Peace band. This is the first time Grammy Award winning pianist-composer-bandleader Chick Corea and guitarist John McLaughlin have joined forces since they were members of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew era band over forty years ago.

CHICK COREA & JOHN McLAUGHLIN

Playing music from then and now, with Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride and Vinne Colaiuta, the Chick Corea & John McLaughlin Five Peace Band is poised to elevate new audiences with series of legendary concerts.

With illustrious musical careers dating back over more than four decades, Chick Corea and John McLaughlin created explosive live bands melding rock with jazz, Return To Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, two of the most popular instrumental groups of all time. Their music went far beyond the ordinary, fusing energy, spirituality, emotion, with improvisation and hard rock. These groups inspired a new generation to expand their own musical horizon.

STEVE WINWOOD video Nine Lives, Festival de Jazz de Malaga

Steve Winwood has multiple talents, a powerful, distinctive voice and excellent keyboard talent, He was initiated in R&B in the 60s with the Spencer Davis Group. At 17 years of age, he formed Traffic, which dissolved in 1969 when he began collaborating with Eric Clapton in the ephemeral Blind Faith. In 1977, he took on a successful career as a soloist, reaching his highest achievements with the publication of the triple Grammy Back in the high life (86) leaving us with classics such as, ¨Higher love¨, ¨Valerie¨, ¨Arc of a diver¨, ¨Talking back to the night¨ and ¨Roll with it¨, all mainly associated with the so-called ¨blue-eyed soul-pop¨, making him a star in the 80s. However, this was the last step in a musical career that also included jazz, psychedelic music, blues-rock and progressive rock. In the 90s, he did many collaborations, punctual sessions, amplified his record production and got Traffic together again in duo format. Within four years, Traffic disappeared definitively.

STEVE WINWOOD Nine Lives, Malaga Jazz

Stive Winwood’s new album Nine Lives touches on and expands on all the many phases and turns of Winwood’s lustrous career, bristling with his pure joy of music-making. The new songs range from the inspiring “Fly” to the burning “Dirty City” (featuring a guest appearance by long-time friend Eric Clapton, hot on the heels of their acclaimed Madison Square Garden concerts together) to the simmering “Hungry Man.” And they join a canon spanning more than forty years and including some of the most beloved songs of modern pop and rock: With his signature work with the Spencer Davis Group (”Gimme Some Lovin’ “) to Traffic (”Dear Mr. Fantasy,” “The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys”), Blind Faith (”Can’t Find My Way Home”) and thirty years of solo ventures (”Higher Love,” “Roll With It”), Winwood continues creating an era-bridging soundtrack of distinctive artistry.

AVISHAI COHEN Eastern Unit, Festival de Jazz de Malaga 2008 video

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

AVISHAI COHEN Festival Jazz Malaga video

Avishai Cohen is not only renowned around the world as an influential double bassist and profound composer, but also as a visionary bandleader following in the footsteps of Mingus, Dave Holland, Jaco Pastorius, Ray Brown, Charlie Haden, Stanley Clarke, and even Sting. In fact, every move Avishai Cohen makes routinely causes waves of critical praise.

AVISHAI COHEN Festival Jazz Malaga 2008 video

Cohen’s career, supported by a style of lovely, original compositions based on the traditional texts and music of Israel’s cultural heritage, has been rapid and brilliant. At ten years of age, he studied the piano in his country, and a bit later, became interested in the electric base. In 1992, he moved to New York, where he began to play live with musicians like Ravi Coltrane, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Paquito D’Rivera and Roy Hargrove, until he became Chick Corea’s steady double bass player. From there, he went on to form his own quartet and after that, a trio. Today, reinforced by young Israeli and American artists, this is the Eastern Unit.
Without abandoning the elements that have made him famous, taking advantage of his native Israel’s fertile mix and even elements from the Sephardic culture, for the very first time, Avishai presents a new project in which singing forms part of his compositions.
