Feria De Malaga, Malaga Fair, 13 - 21 August 2010

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Feria de Malaga (The Malaga Fair) 2010 will be opened on the  La Malagueta beach of on Friday August 13 at 23:50, by singer Javier Ojeda.  Everyone will gather at the beaches to hear the Pregón de la Feria, the official speech that starts the festivities. The opening ceremony will be followed by  a fireworks display, the lighting of the Paseo del Parque and the beach concert of Miguel Boséof  at 24:00. For nine days the city of Málaga will be dedicated to the Feria de Málaga. Basically it is all about music and dance.

Throughout the duration of the fair there will be tons to do ALL day. No matter how old you are or what music you are interested in, there is something for everybody and there you won’t be getting much sleep. Everything starts at 9 every day and as one of the golden rules of the feria there is no time to end the party at night.

On the second day of the fair the city center is transformed with horses carrying people dressed in typical Andalucian costumes. The horses and horse-drawn carriages take Malagenians to the church (Santuario de Ntra. Sra. De La Victoria), where they attend a service and offer flowers to the patron saint of Málaga, the Virgen de la Victoria. This is a chance to see a beautiful display of horse-riding clothes and outfits, horse harnessing and the special andalusian costumes and dresses.

Monday, March 9th, 2009

The show starts off with ‘Lilie’, a large head of a woman. ‘Irene I’, ‘Irene II’ and ‘Odalisca’ are the other sculptures created specially for the same exhibition in Barcelona last year. The theme is repeated: a woman’s oval face is the protagonist. The improvised gallery goes up, It passes women with hairdos, the enormous, “Lady of Elche” with oval eyes, gigantic hands and a metallic curved hairdo. The sculptures show the voluptuousness of the maids of honor to the enormous heads without faces formed by rotund square blocks, from metallic black to oxide. The same street that one year ago welcomed the sculptures of Rodin, now, shows the works of art made by Valdes that is the aim of the tourist’s cameras and the surprise of pedestrians.

British Ski Center Spain, Sierra Nevada skiing untouched by recession

Monday, February 16th, 2009

In spite of the widespread economical recessions and credit crunch, the British Ski Center based in Sierra Nevada has seen a comparable level of business this season to last year with a slight increase in January. This comes perhaps more of a surprise given the added factor of the Pound Sterling dropping so much against the Euro and making Spain around 30% more expensive than this time last year!

‘We have retained our numbers at 11 ski & snowboard instructors and now have two secretaries working hard at responding to customer reservations, greeting clients and coordinating everyone with their respective instructors. Much of our business is from repeat customers or clients who have been recommended by past customers. Our website has also evidently attracted more business this year to last which is an encouraging sign. This year saw our first increase in prices in 3 years but we have kept them entirely competitive with the other ski schools in resort at a base rate of 38.00 euros per hours tuition’ said Giles Birch who established the British Ski Center with Jonathan Buzzard in winter 2002-3.

They aim not to set up just another ski school but also to offer a more personalised service to the clients. The ski instructors are qualified at the “Escuela Española de Esquí (E.E.E.)” and at the “Centro de Formación de Deportes de Invierno Sierra Nevada (C.E.D.I.)”. The snowboard instructors are qualified at the Asociación Española de Snowboard (A.E.S.), at the Escuela Española de Snowboard (E.E.S.) and at the Centro de Formación de Deportes de Invierno Sierra Nevada (C.E.D.I.)

Sierra Nevada, Spain - the best skiing season in 13 years

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Sierra Nevada is currently experiencing its best season of snow in 13 years with average depths recorded up to an impressive 4 metres. The season opened on the 15th December, earlier than ever before and the resort management are hoping to remain open now until the 15th May making this the first full 6 month season in Sierra Nevada’s history.

sierra-nevada-day

The resort of Sierra Nevada offers its visitors a wide range of facilities and a ski terrain to suit skiers & boarders of all standards. It has the best snow and the longest season in the country. Sierra Nevada has 61km of ski slopes with 45 pistes and 6 off-piste routes. There are 2 cable cars, 12 chair lifts and 5 ski lifts. The ski resort is open from 9am to 5pm although you can also ski at night. An important factor that very few resorts are able to boast of, is that you are practically guaranteed sunshine throughout your stay! You can learn more by reading Sierra Neva Overview and view the videos below.

sierrra-nevada-031

All runs are open and with the huge amounts of snowfall several new runs have been prepared and opened in various areas around the ski terrain. In general the piste conditions are superb with powder quality snow. Some of the upper areas have been exposed to high winds and are currently more hard packed and a little icy in places. The off piste is excellent and easily accessible practically anywhere on the mountain except on the upper regions where there is still a lot of icy areas. Avalanche risk is currently very high so be sensible and ask those who know where the best and safest areas would be to ski. All the bad weather of late has now subsided and fantastic Sierra Nevada blue skies have opened up with the sun shining brightly. The weekends are getting busy so try to stick to mid-week where possible bearing in mind also that the coming two weeks will be busy due to half term and Carnival holidays.
