Broken Embraces, Pedro Almodovar and Penelope Cruz in Spanish cinemas

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Broken Embraces, the new Pedro Almodovar movie, starring Penelope Cruz has been realized in Spain with the original title Los Aabrazos Rotos. There’s a sense here that Almodovar, who’s now a stylistic law unto himself, may be more interested in stretching himself technically than in engaging with issues of the wider world. Card-carrying fans can prepare themselves for a rare treat. But those who hoped the pic would extend the quieter, more personal mood shown in Volver, as the 59-year-old helmer moves into the late phase of his career, will be disappointed to find that  Broken Embraces is made not of flesh and blood, but of celluloid. You can watch and embed the the trailer, download photos and read the international press reviews on TVSpain - BROKEN EMBRACES by Pedro Almodovar with Penelope Cruz, trailer, reviews, photos .

Partly a film about films and partly a film about love, Pedro Almodovar’s “Broken Embraces” can’t quite decide where its allegiances lie. A restless, rangy and frankly enjoyable genre-juggler that combines melodrama, comedy and more noir-hued darkness than ever before, the pic is held together by the extraordinary force of Almodovar’s cinematic personality.

But while its four-way in extremis love story dazzles, it never really catches fire. The Spanish helmer’s biggest-budgeted and longest movie to date got warm hugs from Spanish auds on release from March 18, headed for Cannes in May, it goes out worldwide via Sony Pictures Classics, later this year.

Bullfighting Controversy - Spain News by 1Casa

Controversy with the new Bullfighting Season (VIDEO) - Spain Beats Eco-Target - Franco Era Files to be Made Public - Against Seal Hunting Naked Protest in Madrid - - Spain News by 1Casa Estate Agent and 1Casa TV Channel .

Controversy with the new Bullfighting Season (VIDEO)
With the new bullfighting season due to start in April the arguments for and against it have begun in Spain. A 2006 poll showed that around 72% of Spaniards had no interest in the practice, of which about 80% were women and young people. In Catalyuna, under 16’s are not allowed to attend the corrida and protesters are pressing for it to be banned from TV screens. However, bullfighting is worth about 1.5 billion euros to the Spanish economy, and employs around 200,000 people, so an outright ban seems unlikely. Watch video - TOROS BENALMADENA - bullfighting, corrida in Spain on 1CasaTV.

Spain Beats Eco-Target
Spain has already beaten the target set by the EU for production of renewable energy. Thanks to the winter rain and winds, plus the drop in demand due to the economic climate, this year so far has seen 30% of the country’s total energy produced using renewable methods. The winds blowing through northwest Spain last week generated 11,180 Megawatts, 40% of the country’s total needs, a new record.

Franco Era Files to be Made Public
It has been reported in the Spanish press that all military judicial files dating from the Franco era 1939-75 are to be opened to public view. About 400,000 files will be restored, digitalised and placed in a central archive. This will help those seeking to annul sentences summarily handed out to relatives during that period.

Against Seal Hunting Naked Protest in Madrid
Various cities across the world have seen strong protests aginst the hunting of seals in Canada. There have also been demonstrations in Spain, but none quite like the one in Madrid, where about 100 activists stripped off, covered themselves in fake blood and lay down in La Puerta del Sol, the centre of the city. This year, Canada has authorised the killing of 30,000 seals for fur.
