11 FESTIVAL DE MÃLAGA, Spanish Film Festival 2008 in Malaga, visitor’s guide

Monday, March 31st, 2008

The 11th “Festival de Malaga” featuring Spanish films made in 2007 / 2008, takes plase in the town of Malaga between 4th and 12 April and is the most important talent showcase of the Spanish Cinematography.

In the long history of Spanish cinema, the great filmmaker Luis Buñuel was the first to achieve universal recognition, followed by Pedro Almodóvar in the 1980s. In recent years, Spanish cinema has achieved high marks of recognition as a result of its creative and technical excellence with films by directors like Segundo de Chomón, Florián Rey, Luis García Berlanga, Carlos Saura, Julio Medem and Alejandro Amenábar. The Spanish actors Penélope Cruz , Fernando Rey, Antonio Banderas, Javier Bardem and Fernando Fernán Gómez have obtained world recognition and many international awards including the Oscars..
.
Another aspect of Spanish cinema mostly unknown to the general public is the appearance of English-language Spanish films such as The Machinist (starring Christian Bale) The Others (starring Nicole Kidman), Basic Instinct 2 (starring Sharon Stone), and Milos Forman’s Goya’s Ghosts (starring Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman). All of these films were produced by Spanish firms. This attests to the dynamism and creativity of Spanish directors and producers.

Today, only 10 to 20% of box office receipts in Spain are generated by domestic films, a situation that repeats itself in many nations of Europe. The Spanish government has therefore implemented various measures aimed at supporting local film production and movie theatres, which include the assurance of funding from the main national television stations. The trend is being reversed with the recent screening of mega productions such as the €30 million film Alatriste (starring Viggo Mortensen), the Academy Award winning Spanish/Mexican film Pan’s Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno), Volver (starring Penélope Cruz), and Los Borgia (€10 million), all of them sold-out blockbusters in Spain.

This year the “Festival de Malaga” is featuring a hefty dose of directorial debuts mixed with veteran directors:

Headline-inspired plots include Ana Diez’s “Paisito - Small Country” about immigrants’ lives and loves upon reunion, Xavi Puebla’s “Bienvenido a Farewell-Gutmann - Welcome To Farewell-Gutmannusing a multinational pharmaceutical company as a backdrop, Juan Cruz and Jose Corbacho’s ” Cobardes - Cowards” about high school bullying and Antonio Gonzalez-Vigil’s “Naranjo en flor - Flower of Seduction” a strange fascination with a man who has to discover a crime.

JOHN CALE, legendary ex Velvet Underground, video of Malga concert

Friday, March 28th, 2008

John Cale, ex-Velvet Underground and multi-instrumentalist came to Teatro Cervantes in Malaga with his Acoustimatic Band - see video of the concert.

After two Velvets albums (The Velvet Underground and Nico and White Light/White Heat), Cale left in 1968 for a solo career. By 1993 Cale had come full circle: Having, two years earlier, collaborated with Lou Reed on Songs for Drella, a tribute to Velvet Underground mentor Andy Warhol, he teamed with the Velvets on a reunion tour.

In March 2007 a 23 song live retrospective, Circus Live was released in Europe. This two-disc album, composed of recordings from both the 2004 and 2006 tours, featured new arrangements and reworkings of songs from his entire career. Of particular interest is the Amsterdam Suite, a set of songs from a performance at the Amsterdam Paradiso in 2004 (archived by the venue on their internet performance repository). A studio-created drone has been edited into these songs. The set also included a DVD, featuring electric rehearsal material and a short acoustic set, as well as a “Jumbo in Tha Modernworld” for 2006 single.

His work shows a fascination with opposites: lyricism and noise, subtlety and bluntness, hypnotic repetition and sudden change.

SARA BARAS - Carmen. Video of the “flamenco icon” performing in Malaga.

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

SARA BARAS, one of the most famous Spanish flamenco dancer came to Teatro Cervantes in Malaga with her new production CARMEN, directed, choreographed and stage designed by Sara Baras, who plays the role of Carmen.

Carmen is already a myth which for decades has lived in the collective imagination of Spanish culture - the strength of her female attitude has broken away from the character created by Merimée and today exists in its own right. Her passionate way of life is no longer scandalous and her right to make decisions and live is given expression by many women who, nowadays, hold something of Carmen within themselves. This Carmen, created by Sara Baras, has also moved away from her author, the original story and Bizet himself in his lyrical version, although she is still tied to the tragic love that symbolises her. Carmen, the show, has the strength of its origins with Flamenco’s effortless ability for expression.

You can find more information about the show, embed the video and download photos on your site or blog by visiting TVSpain.
