11 FESTIVAL DE MÃLAGA, Spanish Film Festival 2008 in Malaga, visitor’s guide

Monday, March 31st, 2008

The 11th “Festival de Malaga” featuring Spanish films made in 2007 / 2008, takes plase in the town of Malaga between 4th and 12 April and is the most important talent showcase of the Spanish Cinematography.

In the long history of Spanish cinema, the great filmmaker Luis Buñuel was the first to achieve universal recognition, followed by Pedro Almodóvar in the 1980s. In recent years, Spanish cinema has achieved high marks of recognition as a result of its creative and technical excellence with films by directors like Segundo de Chomón, Florián Rey, Luis García Berlanga, Carlos Saura, Julio Medem and Alejandro Amenábar. The Spanish actors Penélope Cruz , Fernando Rey, Antonio Banderas, Javier Bardem and Fernando Fernán Gómez have obtained world recognition and many international awards including the Oscars..
.
Another aspect of Spanish cinema mostly unknown to the general public is the appearance of English-language Spanish films such as The Machinist (starring Christian Bale) The Others (starring Nicole Kidman), Basic Instinct 2 (starring Sharon Stone), and Milos Forman’s Goya’s Ghosts (starring Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman). All of these films were produced by Spanish firms. This attests to the dynamism and creativity of Spanish directors and producers.

Today, only 10 to 20% of box office receipts in Spain are generated by domestic films, a situation that repeats itself in many nations of Europe. The Spanish government has therefore implemented various measures aimed at supporting local film production and movie theatres, which include the assurance of funding from the main national television stations. The trend is being reversed with the recent screening of mega productions such as the €30 million film Alatriste (starring Viggo Mortensen), the Academy Award winning Spanish/Mexican film Pan’s Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno), Volver (starring Penélope Cruz), and Los Borgia (€10 million), all of them sold-out blockbusters in Spain.

This year the “Festival de Malaga” is featuring a hefty dose of directorial debuts mixed with veteran directors:

Below is the excerpt article MALAGA UNVEILS COMPETITION LINEUP by EMILIO MAYORGA at Variety.com:

BARCELONA — The 11th Malaga Film Festival, Spain’s main showcase for homegrown talent, unveiled its 15-pic official competition on Tuesday. Nine movies are first fiction features.

Competish’s biggest hitters are 81-year-old Jaime de Arminan with “14, Fabian Road,” about the strained relationship between a writer and one of her admirers, and Manuel Gutierrez-Aragon’s polemical “Todos estamos invitados,” which turns on an ETA terrorist who suffers from amnesia.

The lineup boasts two modern morality tales: Xavi Puebla’s “Bienvenido a Farewell-Gutmann,” set in a multinational pharmaceutical company, and a rare sci-fi outing for Spanish cinema, Javier Gutierrez’s redemption tale “Before the Fall,” which is co-produced by Antonio Banderas.

Fest also features several laffers. Nacho Garcia Velilla’s “Fuera de carta” is about the family problems of a gay chef. Two hander “Pajaros muertos,” from brothers Guillermo and Jorge Sempere, is a black comedy set in the suburbs. Juan Luis Iborra’s “Enloquecidas” has three women trying to track down their missing lover. Juan Cavestany’s first solo feature, “Gente de mala calidad,” is a gently ironic view of life in a minor city.

Malaga also hosts Guillermo Groizard’s long in gestation identity thriller, “Proyecto dos,” actress Silvia Munt’s marriage crisis dramedy, “Pretextos” and Xavier Bermudez’s “Rafael,” a portrait of a man’s unusual relationships.

“Cobardes,” from Juan Cruz and Jose Corbacho, chronicles high school bullying. Peris Romano and Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “Ocho citas,” which is drawing good buzz, looks at love in different generations of the same family.

Fest competition is rounded out by Antonio Gonzalez Vigil’s “Naranjo en flor,” about a psychoanalyst who accidentally kills a man, and Ana Diez’s tale of love reborn, “Paisito.”

Playing out-of-competition, the lyrical “A Tram in SP” looks like a touching vision of the dreams of old age from first-timer Aitzol Aramaio.

Potential standouts in an 18-pic documentary sidebar include Gonzalo Arijon’s “Naufragos: Vengo de un avion que cayo en las montanas,” Carlos Carcas’ “Old Man Bebo” and Andres di Tella’s “Fotografias.”
