SARA BARAS, the one of the most famous Spanish flamenco dancer came to Teatro Cervantes in Malaga with her new production CARMEN, directed, choreographed, and stage designed by Sara Baras, who plays the role of Carmen. She admitted that she had wanted to dance this character, created by the novelist Prosper Mérimée, since she was small. She says she thinks she has been “very brave" with the choreography and added that "I didn’t want to adapt a single step from previous shows. It’s all new". She also explains that “Carmen has become independent from Mérimée’s storyline and nearly from Bizet’s music. On the other hand, the love tragedy is maintained, expressed through the images generated by the code belonging to flamenco, song and baile”. Carmen is already a myth which for decades has lived in the collective imagination of Spanish culture - the strength of her female attitude has broken away from the character created by Merimée and today exists in its own right. Her passionate way of life is no longer scandalous and her right to make decisions and live is given expression by many women who, nowadays, hold something of Carmen within themselves. This Carmen, created by Sara Baras, has also moved away from her author, the original story and Bizet himself in his lyrical version, although she is still tied to the tragic love that symbolises her. Carmen, the show, has the strength of its origins with Flamenco’s effortless ability for expression.
